Load the hips, not the shoulders, and keep the squat knee-dominant.

No-Fly Zone
Avoid improvised unstable risers, a belt that compresses sensitive tissue, or load that drags the pelvis into an uncontrolled tilt at the bottom.
Programming
Flexible
It can anchor a knee-dominant session or follow an axially loaded squat when more leg work is wanted without repeating the same trunk and shoulder constraint.
Model — Double
Fallback model — Double
Freeze stance, belt position, and depth; reach the top of the rep range with the same knee travel and balance before adding load.
Legs
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Adjust stance, platform height, and belt position until the cable clears the body and the pelvis stays comfortable.
Step 2
Use a two-second descent or a brief bottom pause before increasing the machine load.
Step 3
Hack squat, leg press, or goblet squat to a controlled depth.
Substitutions
Hack squat, leg press, or goblet squat to a controlled depth.
The Evidence
Belt squats reduce some upper-body and axial constraints but do not eliminate spinal loading or guarantee greater quadriceps growth. Platform and attachment geometry can materially change the exercise.
