No-Fly Zone
Avoid seat positions that force the elbows far behind the torso, bouncing from the bottom, or load that pulls the back and head from the pad.
Programming
Flexible
The stable high-output press can lead shoulder work or follow a freer overhead press when additional front-delt volume is wanted without more balance demand.
Model — Double
Fallback model — Double
Keep seat height, grip, bottom depth, and pad contact fixed; reach the top of the rep range before adding the smallest equal load.
Push
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Change seat height and grip until the forearms track the handles and the shoulder remains comfortable at the bottom.
Step 2
Use a slower descent or a brief bottom pause before increasing load.
Step 3
Machine shoulder press, cable overhead press, or high-incline dumbbell press.
Substitutions
Machine shoulder press, cable overhead press, or high-incline dumbbell press.
The Evidence
The high incline changes support and joint emphasis, but the exact machine angle may make it more chest- or shoulder-dominant. Its S tier remains a theory score separate from evidence grade D.
