No-Fly Zone
Avoid loads that require elbow flexion, neck extension, or torso lifting from the bench.
Programming
Late
It is a low-systemic-fatigue scapular accessory that fits after the heavier rows and pulls.
Model — Double
Fallback model — RPE
Keep the bench angle and straight-arm scapular range fixed; add reps before moving up one dumbbell step.
Pull
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Reduce the bench angle, load, or range until scapular motion is clear.
Step 2
Use a two-second squeeze and a three-second return.
Step 3
Chest-supported high row or cable face pull.
Substitutions
Chest-supported high row or cable face pull.
The Evidence
This isolates scapular retraction more than a conventional row. It does not replace loaded rowing for all upper-back functions or prove a direct hypertrophy advantage.
