No-Fly Zone
Avoid shallow bouncing, unlocked safeties, or a foot position that can slide from the plate.
Programming
Late
It uses a stable machine but directly fatigues the calves, so it fits after primary leg-press or squat work.
Model — Double
Fallback model — Density
Keep foot placement, knee angle, and heel range fixed; reach the rep cap before adding matched plates.
Legs
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Reduce load, move more foot onto the plate, or shorten range until security is unquestioned.
Step 2
Use a two-second bottom pause and one-second top pause.
Step 3
Standing calf-raise machine or single-leg dumbbell calf raise.
Substitutions
Standing calf-raise machine or single-leg dumbbell calf raise.
The Evidence
This is a stable straight-knee calf setup when the footplate and safeties fit the lifter. Machine design can change the usable range and security.
