How to do it

Setup

  • Center the body in the machine
  • Set handles or pads to fit the frame
  • Keep arms long and head neutral
  • Let the shoulder blades settle down at the start

Execution

  • Elevate the shoulders straight upward
  • Pause at the highest controlled position
  • Lower fully without collapsing
  • Keep elbows quiet

Common Errors

  • Rolling the shoulders in circles
  • Bending the elbows
  • Jutting the head forward
  • Bouncing through a short range

Cues That Work

  • Shoulders to ears; arms stay long; lower all the way

No-Fly Zone

Avoid loads that shorten the shrug to a bounce or require elbow flexion.

Programming

Sequence priority

Flexible

It is stable and locally fatiguing, so it fits after compound pulls without adding much technical demand.

Progression

Model — Double

Fallback model — Density

Keep the bottom stretch, top height, and pause unchanged; reach the rep cap before adding matched plates.

Best program fit

Pull

Load increments

Standardone small plate per side
Smaller incrementadd reps or a one-second top pause
Larger incrementthe next matched plate increase

If it hurts

Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.

Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.

  1. Step 1

    Setup tweaks

Adjust handle or pad position and reduce load until the lever path feels natural.

  2. Step 2

    ROM / tempo / bias

    Use a two-second top hold or a three-second lower.

  3. Step 3

    Implement swap

    Cable shrug or dumbbell shrug.

Substitutions

Approved fallback

Cable shrug or dumbbell shrug.

The Evidence

This is a stable shrug setup with simple loading. Machine geometry can reverse that advantage for a lifter who does not fit the path.
