No-Fly Zone
Avoid bouncing from the bottom or using load that makes balance shorten the range.
Programming
Late
Direct calf work is low in systemic fatigue and is easiest to execute after balance-heavy lower-body work.
Model — Double
Fallback model — Density
Keep the knee straight, use hand support, and retain the same stretch; add reps before increasing the dumbbell.
Legs
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Use bodyweight, a shorter range, or two-leg assistance.
Step 2
Use a two-second stretch and one-second top pause.
Step 3
Standing calf-raise machine or leg-press calf press.
Substitutions
Standing calf-raise machine or leg-press calf press.
The Evidence
This is a low-equipment unilateral calf option. It does not make unilateral work inherently superior to a stable machine when both sides are otherwise trained well.
