Let the pad own the torso so the upper arms own the row.

No-Fly Zone
Avoid turning the high row into a shrug, levering the chest off the pad, or chasing a handle position that forces shoulder discomfort.
Programming
Flexible
The stable compound path can anchor lat work early, or follow a heavier row when the goal is more local pulling without another trunk-limited set.
Model — Double
Fallback model — Double
Match the weaker side's clean repetitions, retain chest contact and elbow path, then add the smallest equal load increase.
Pull
If it hurts
Pain is information, not a challenge to push through. Stop the set if pain is sharp, worsening, or changes how you move. These are exercise-selection options, not medical diagnosis or rehabilitation advice.
Work down this list in order. Stop at the first change that removes the pain.
Step 1
Change seat height or handle choice until the line of pull feels diagonal and the shoulder stays comfortable.
Step 2
Perform alternating arms or a unilateral set when one side cannot match the other's range without rotation.
Step 3
Chest-supported dumbbell row, seated cable row, or plate-loaded isolateral pulldown.
Substitutions
Chest-supported dumbbell row, seated cable row, or plate-loaded isolateral pulldown.
The Evidence
The exact machine arc determines whether this behaves more like a lat-directed high row or an upper-back row. The atlas tier is a mechanics judgment, not direct proof of a superior hypertrophy outcome.
