How to do it

Setup

  • Stand tall, soft knees, dumbbells at sides
  • Soft elbows; neutral or slightly thumb-down grip
  • Slight forward torso lean to line the side delt up with gravity
  • Brace abs; depress shoulder blades (don't pre-shrug)

Execution

  • Lead with the elbows, raise to shoulder height
  • Feel tension in the side delt, not the traps
  • No swing
  • the weight should look light
  • Control the eccentric all the way down

Common Errors

  • Shrugging first / leading with the traps instead of the side delt
  • Bending the elbows excessively (turns it into an upright row)
  • Going too heavy → momentum and traps take over
  • Raising above shoulder height (shifts load to the traps)
  • Bouncing out of the bottom

Cues That Work

  • 'Pour the pitcher' (slight thumb-down)
  • 'Push the weights out, not up'
  • 'Lead with the elbow'
  • 'Long arc, light weight'

No-Fly Zone

under 8 reps (going heavy turns it into a trap/momentum swing)

What about supplements?

Train hard and hit your protein first — that's most of it. If the fundamentals are handled, two are worth it for building muscle:

Creatine

Monohydrate, 5 g/day. The most studied muscle supplement.
